Diane Kimbrough: The Woman Behind the Lens

Written By: Terrell Everett

In the bustling landscape of film, television, and literature, few names shine as brightly as Diane Kimbrough. A Detroit native with an extraordinary talent for storytelling, Diane’s journey from behind-the-scenes virtuoso to published author exemplifies her relentless pursuit of purpose, passion, and creativity. With an illustrious career spanning iconic productions and groundbreaking roles, she embodies the spirit of transformation—both in her personal journey and the stories she crafts.

Diane’s career began as a Locations Manager. With an innate eye for selecting landscapes that narrate stories of their own, she curated the visual backdrops for productions such as Rickey Smiley For Real, Lodge 49, and the cult classic SuperFly. Yet, it was her work on Preachers of Atlanta that remains her personal favorite—a project that harmonized her love for storytelling with deeply rooted themes of faith and resilience.

Her love for exploration and storytelling naturally led Diane into the dynamic world of production. As a producer, she played a pivotal role in bringing diverse stories to life, spanning genres and platforms. From the family-centered reality of T.I. & Tiny: Friends & Family Hustle to the entrepreneurial rigor of Shark Tank and the unfiltered drama of Joseline’s Cabaret, Diane’s portfolio is a testament to her versatility and commitment to authentic narratives. Projects like Baddies and College Hill further underscore her ability to capture the pulse of contemporary culture.

Now, as a Development Executive at Zeus Network, Diane continues to break barriers, producing content that challenges conventions and resonates deeply with audiences. Her keen sense of narrative structure and character development ensures that each project she touches leaves a lasting impact.

While Diane has spent years shaping other people’s stories, her debut novel, Finding Her Way, marks a poignant shift. Drawing inspiration from her own journey—from Detroit to Atlanta, and eventually Los Angeles—the novel is a reflection of her courage, growth, and unyielding quest for purpose. It’s a deeply personal story that resonates with anyone navigating the complexities of change and self-discovery.

In Finding Her Way, Diane channels her experiences into prose, offering readers an intimate glimpse into her soul. It’s more than a novel; it’s a roadmap for anyone striving to redefine their path.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Diane is a devoted mother and a self-proclaimed foodie—a detail that adds an endearing layer to her multifaceted persona. Her love for food mirrors her approach to storytelling: rich, diverse, and always seasoned with authenticity.

Whether on set, in the boardroom, or at her writing desk, Diane Kimbrough remains a beacon of inspiration. Her journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, the beauty of storytelling, and the importance of staying true to oneself. As she continues to shape narratives that captivate, educate, and empower, one thing is clear: Diane is not just finding her way—she’s paving the path for others to follow.

Hailing from Detroit, how did you make your way into television/film?

My first introduction to TV and Film was when I lived in Atlanta Georgia. I worked as a Locations manager and I was able to make a lot of connections, but also able to watch certain positions on set to determine what I wanted to do with my career. Working in locations was great for me because it taught me how to provide a space that was conducive for everyone to do their job.

Where do you think your love for storytelling comes from?

My love for storytelling came from all of my past experiences. I grew up in the inner city of Detroit, where storytelling was a tool we used to share our experiences and learn from each other. That’s the beauty of my industry; we get to tell the stories that we lived, survived ,and thrived from.

What does it mean to be a black woman in entertainment?

Being a black woman in entertainment comes with its own challenges. We have so many odds against us, but one thing about black women is we are resilient and we find a way to make everything better around us.

Tell me what’s your definition of beauty?

There’s a combination of qualities that can make you beautiful! I believe beauty is not just about aesthetics, but it is truly about how you treat yourself and others by your generosity and kindness.

Working on such prolific shows, which proves to be your favorite and why?

Shark Tank is one of my favorite shows. I met some phenomenal men and women who had some of the best inventions and ideas but needed the capital in order to keep their business alive. I have a great appreciation for these entrepreneurs that literally spent their last to take a chance on themselves!

You wrote a novel, can you tell us about it and what inspired you?

In 2020 I decided to write a script; I wanted to tell a story that I would one day want to watch on TV/Film. Around the pandemic I believe we were all trying to find our way to our next aspiration. My book was literally birthed out of trying to find my way. “Finding her way” is about a woman who left everything behind to find a better life!

Who is Diane behind the lens?

What a great question! I’m a woman who loves to travel and enjoy life to the fullest. Traveling and fine dining has always been on the top of my list of living! I believe my greatest accomplishment was raising my son. I really strive to be the best mom I could possibly be.

Can you share what’s the next story you wish to share, be it film, television, or maybe another novel?

I am a hopelessly romantic person. I hope to one day have a hit series or a film, showing how black women are supported and loved unconditionally by her man.

Being a black woman and executive nonetheless, what example would you like other women to take from you?

I would like other women to know that your journey is your own, do not compare your life to others. It took me over 10 years to get to the level that I am today. Every job I took in production made me into the woman that I am today! I am currently the Head of Development at the Zeus Network. It is literally a dream come true

What does hype hair mean to you? What’s your favorite Hype Hair memory?

I can recall the days waiting on my stylist and picking up a Hype Hair magazine to find my next hairstyle . I would’ve never believed in a million years that I would be a part of something that’s been in our culture since the 90s this opportunity means the world to me because I’m all about Black culture! My favorite hype hair memory is when Aaliyah graced the cover back in the 90s, that was huge for us Detroit girls. I know for sure I started wearing my hair over my eye because of her!
